Into this: A major (Raf Simons-shaped) shift at Prada
I’m excited for the news that Raf Simons will be co-creative director of Prada alongside Miuccia as of April 2nd. The news was announced on Sunday, after Milan Fashion Week editors were invited to an impromptu press conference at Prada HQ.
The joint creative directorship has been positively received by the industry, although not without questions. In short, how do two equally radical and intellectual minds share the load?
I’m a Raf fan, of course, and happy to see some future creative stability ensured at Prada. And intellectually I’m on board. While the word ‘collaboration’ is bandied about so much that it’s become meaningless, this one actually comes from a place of shared cultural ideas and respect. Here’s part of the official statement:
“If the notion of a partnership is to work jointly, the result of that conversation may not only be product but also the propagation of a thought and culture. A pure vision of creativity, with the product a vehicle for those thoughts.”
Fashion needs some (real) disruption at the moment and this might be the re-set it needs. We’ll see the results for SS21. Um, no pressure, guys.
