Cannes red carpet: garconnes do it better
What is it about the Cannes red carpet that’s so much more refined than other red carpets? Don’t answer that. I think I know the answer already.
American premieres and awards are super-planned and super-commercial, all about diamonds and deals. Somehow Cannes just seems a bit cooler. Here’s the evidence; Jane Birkin and Charlotte Gainsbourg in classic garconne style – Birkin in Celine and Gainsbourg in Saint Laurent. I’m also loving the tuxedos, undone hair and absence of a bejewelled choker. I’m not going to mention ages here – it’s irrelevant. But the lack of Botox and filler is refreshing. (Other red carpet highlights at the 74th Cannes; Isabel Huppert in Balenciaga, Tilda Swinton in Chanel and Maggie Gylenhaal in Celine.)
The duo were promoting their film, a documentary called ‘Jane By Charlotte’. Charlotte Gainsbourg directed the doc, which looks to be a heartfelt and honest examination of their mother-daughter relationship. Can’t wait to see it. You can watch the trailer here.

They both look so gorgeous, genuine, and cool. The Garconne look actually highlights their confidence and strong femininity. Stunning.

Thanks for posting the link to Jane. I’m looking forward to watching it. I’ve always loved the way Charlotte dresses, and her preference for a bare face…. she is the epitome of chic, IMO.
As for the clothing, I love a nice velvet suit on the red carpet. As a woman married to a not famous actor but who ends up on a lot of red carpets from all the movies he does, it’s my go-to. No photographers care about me so I don’t feel the pressure of being “queen of the night”, and a comfortable suit, reflecting my own personal style is so nice. I am always amused by the women who show up not aware that their ball gown is inappropriate unless they are famous. They sit around the after-party looking like gilded nuts.

LOL thanks Monique, I think maybe the reason they look so cool is because they’re wearing things they feel comfortable in and so they don’t look/feel self conscious…? whereas I don’t have anything against wearing a great gown etc but too often the wearer looks overstyled and just overwhelmed, like they’re too aware of trying to carry themselves in a certain way or the shoes hurt etc!
