Try it now: the ingénue eye

Frankie beauty by Christabel Draffin

If you loved the gamine beauty look from our recent Petit Dejeuner shoot, make-up artist Christabel Draffin is on hand to break it down…

Christabel says… For our recent ‘On Balance’ shoot, we had a young Francoise Hardy ingénue in mind, which is all about the eyeliner.

Our model Frankie had perfect skin, so I just prepped it with a nice Chanel moisturiser and Vitalumiere foundation only where needed. This has been one of my favourite foundations for many years and it’s especially great in winter as it gives a real glow to the skin, adding a luminosity and sheen that the colder months might have stolen away. I applied it with a damp Beauty Blender and added a touch of NARS Soft Matte concealer under the eyes. I added a gentle flush to skin with Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Stick in no 23. This gives a very ‘real’ colour to the skin – I wanted Frankie to look young and fresh (which she is!).

The eyeliner was the focal point for this look so I used NARS Black Valley Eye Paint as my base using a Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush. I love the Black Valley Eye Paint, as it’s the darkest, deepest, most delicious black eyeliner on the planet. Getting the shape right just involves looking in a mirror with your eyes open to get the ‘wing’ in the correct position (it’s supposed to lift your eye up, rather than drag it down), and then making any little corrections to the shape with Bioderma Crealine makeup remover and mini Muji cotton buds. (These really are the secret to a perfect cat’s eye. And patience.)

Once I had the shape right, I went over the NARS Eye Paint with Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Pen for extra French inkiness, and added two coats of Chanel Inimitable mascara. I also added a mix of Chanel brown shadows in the crease of the eye to add depth and give the eye some dimension.

I wanted to keep lips natural and simple so I went over the whole lip with Rimmel’s classic East End Snob lip liner, and used Revlon’s Ultra HD Gel Lipcolour in Arabica, which is a lovely flat nude. As ever I am loving Revlon’s lip products as they are great quality and not expensive. I’ve been using this a lot lately on shoots where I want a lip that doesn’t feel too done.
