On fashion documentaries, Antonio Lopez and Andre Leon Talley
What’s with all the fashion docs? Since ‘The Internet’ raised the curtain of the fashion biz to all and sundry, it seems the floodgates have opened for every type of fashion documentary. The more we have access to, the more we want to see behind the scenes.
Am I complaining?
Hell, no.
The September Issue set the gold standard, Bill Cunningham New York was another corker, I’ve heard good things about Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards and I enjoyed Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist. Slightly more under the radar is John Simons – A Modernist, a forthcoming documentary about every ageing prepster’s favourite London store.
Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex Fashion & Disco was absolutely brilliant. I saw it at the ICA a couple of weeks ago followed by a Q&A from director James Crump. It gathered a handful of Lopez’s closest friends and models to tell his story of New York fashion and nightlife at the height of the hedonistic 70s. The great thing about hearing it from the people who were actually there was that you got a really joyful energy from their anecdotes – in particular Pat Cleveland and Bill Cunningham. And of course, if you love fashion illustration, the visuals are unmissable. The film is into its third week at the ICA and is coming to the U.S later in the year.
And then there’s the forthcoming Andre Leon Talley doc, The Gospel According To Andre. I’m calling it now, Fran Leibowitz is going to be the star of this show. I’ve read the book, so I know that this is going to be one fascinating tale. Here’s the trailer to get you in the mood…
